I have to print a retraction about the Hoopa problem. The fee is $6.00 per car not $5.00 like I said last week and there is NO COMMERCIAL ALLOWED! Not even rafting, what a shame. This is due to my error in not double checking out the information I received before publishing it. Sorry, but I still hope to meet with the Tribal Council sometime this month.
Water flows are still dropping and the snow melt is almost over. This would mean that the Trinity should be pretty much on schedule for flow reductions into July and reaching the summer flows of 450cfs by July 12.

The Kids Fish Derby up at Fish Lake, Sponsored by the Orleans Rod & Gun Club with the Orleans Ranger District, will be June 30th this year. We had to move it back due to the late spring rains and the Port Orford Cedar fungus problem. This is a little later than usual but I think it will work out better as the schools will be out and maybe more parents will be able to come up to participate. We are going to try and make it the last Saturday of June from now on so as not to interfere with other programs. Remember this is a family program and provides a great outdoor experience for the kids. After the fishing there will be a FREE HOT DOG lunch.

Fishing:

The Trinity River is really starting to look good, Friday on my way back from Redding I could see that even though the river was some what high it was in great condition for fishing. We are still going to have to wait a couple more weeks before it will  be fishable but that has not stopped the salmon from coming on up. I have heard that some locals have been trying to go down Grays Falls to hook some springers but most are getting skunked. Even my buddy from Weitchpec tried but came out blank. Patients will help as there will be time for you to get down there and catch some springers this year because there are going to be more salmon than we can catch.

Remember you cannot keep any salmon below the confluence of the South Fork of the Trinity to the confluence of the Klamath. But one can fish above the South Fork and keep 2 salmon per day with 2 in possession. The fall fishing regulations for the Trinity don’t kick in until Sept. 1st. Also be sure to check out the fishing regulations before you go fishing and be double sure of where you are fishing because the new rules and fines are very specific.  I don’t want to hear about anyone being fined for NOT following the regulations.
Right now the spring salmon will go after spinners and one of the better colors are Blur Fox # 5 spinner with red or orange body and silver blade. Another one is#4 or 5 Mepps with silver blade. I find that the Mepps spinner works a little better in the high water but I have heard that Blue Fox has come out with a new spinner that is heavier for the high water flows. I haven’t found any yet but they have been advertised in the Salmon Trout Steelheader magazine.
